2:35pm Perspectives on Taxing Same-Sex and Unmarried Couples. Same-sex and unmarried couples face unique challenges in a tax system that privileges marriage over all other forms of relationship. This panel will consider these challenges from a variety of perspectives. It will explore the application of the tax laws to same-sex and unmarried couples as well as the policy alternatives to the privileging of marriage in the Internal Revenue Code. The panel will conclude with a comparative/international perspective on the taxation of same-sex and unmarried couples, exploring how other countries have addressed these issues.
