The International Bar Association (IBA), established in 1947, is the world’s leading organisation of international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies. The IBA influences the development of international law reform and shapes the future of the legal profession throughout the world. It has a membership of 30,000 individual lawyers and more than 195 bar associations and law societies spanning all continents. It has considerable expertise in providing assistance to the global legal community as well as being a source of distinguished legal commentators for international news outlets.

Grouped into two divisions – the Legal Practice Division and the Public and Professional Interest Division – the IBA covers all practice areas and professional interests, providing members with access to leading experts and up-to-date information. Through the various committees of the divisions, the IBA enables an interchange of information and views among its members as to laws, practices and professional responsibilities relating to the practice of business law around the globe.

Taxes Committee
The Taxes Committee offers its members access to the highest quality technical, practical and professional tax expertise to assist in understanding and finding solutions to international tax issues and concerns. The committee is divided informally into four practice group areas - Income Taxes, Other Taxes, Tax Litigation and Employee Benefits, and is part of the taxation section. The committee also offers tax executives a forum, in its tax executives group, to exchange expertise and skills with their colleagues in industry on topics of special interest.

Formed in 1938, the International Fiscal Association (IFA) is a leading non-governmental, international organization dealing with tax matters.  Headquartered in Rotterdam, IFA is comprised of company tax personnel, tax advisers, university professors, and government officials.  With approximately 11,000 members worldwide in over 90 countries, IFA provides a unique forum for discussing international tax questions.  IFA has national branches in nearly fifty countries.

The objectives of IFA are the study and advancement of international and comparative fiscal law and taxation. This is achieved by publication of an annual scientific research study on two major subjects, seminar papers on topical fiscal matters, and cooperation with related organizations such as the OECD and the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation.

IFA also annually hosts a Congress held in a major city throughout the world.  The 2008 Congress will take place in Brussels during the week of September 1st.

The USA Branch is the largest national IFA branch, with approximately 1,200 members.  The Branch hosts a two-day conference in late February/early March of each year with presentations by eminent international tax experts on topics, planning ideas and issues of current importance.  The USA Branch also holds joint meetings each year with a branch from another country.  The link above to the IFA USA Branch website provides additional information the IFA USA Branch.
