Bus Trip to El Escorial with Tour of El Monsaterio and Library
2:00pm departure*; 7:00pm approximate arrival back to Madrid
A bus will transport attendees from Madrid to the town of El Escorial where they will tour the monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. The monastery was built by order of King Felipe II, who conceived it as a royal pantheon and turned it into his centre of political operations. Built of granite, it is one of the most gigantic yet simple architectural monuments on the Iberian Peninsula and the most notable features are the symmetry and balance that completely dominate the architectural composition and the austere decoration. Attendees will also tour the monastery''s surprisingly lavish and colorful library, with ceiling paintings by Michelangelo’s disciple Pellegrino Tibaldi. The imposing austerity of El Escorial''s facades makes this chromatic explosion especially powerful. The library houses 50,000 rare manuscripts, codices, and ancient books, including the diary of St. Teresa of Ávila and the gold-lettered, illuminated Codex Aureus.

*Travel time each way to El Escorial is approximately 30 – 45 minutes.
