Victorian Homes Tour

Saturday, September 13
9:30AM – 12:00PM
Ticketed Event: $70

Nothing is as “San Francisco” as the beautiful Victorian homes gracing many of the city streets. Take this opportunity to explore the famous “postcard row” at Alamo square park and learn first-hand about the history and architecture of two of the famous “painted ladies” from the current homeowners. A private guide will take guests into these beautifully maintained homes, where guests will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the home, the architecture and the backgrounds of the former owners.

The Shannon-Kavanaugh House, built in 1892 by carpenter-builder Matthew Kavanaugh for his own family, has become one of the most famous buildings in America. The 4500-square-foot home is set against the magnificent backdrop of the San Francisco city skyline. The elegant Queen Anne-style structure has become familiar through its role in over 40 films, television series and commercials. This tour will be guided by Michael Shannon, the current owner of the home.

Next, guests will visit the Brune-Reutlinger House. Built in 1886 for the wealthy San Franciscan Henry Brune, The home features Italianate architecture with some Eastlake features in the exterior decoration, including heavily bracketed eves, highly ornamented slanted bays and arched windows with flanking rounded colonettes. The decorative corner block suggests the masonry reinforcements of the 17th century Italian houses.  The interior features 15-foot high ceilings and classical Greek and Roman woodwork. The house, modern for its time, features coal-burning central heating, electric starters for the gas lights, an electric bell and speaking tube systems. The interior decoration has been returned to the opulence of the mid-1880’s and features a wide variety of Victorian art wallpapers, stencil-work, lincrusta wainscoting and period light fixtures. This tour will be guided by the current owner, Richard Reutlinger.

After touring these homes, guests will take a moment to explore the landmark Alamo Square Park before heading back to the Hyatt Regency.
