Since the Department of Labor issued final regulations on “qualified default investment alternatives” (“QDIAs”) last fall, a number of legal and practical questions have been raised as employers and plan fiduciaries seek to apply those rules.  The DOL responded to some of those questions by issuing additional guidance in the form of Field Assistance Bulletin 2008-03 and technical amendments to the final regulations.   Many plans are choosing so-called "life cycle” or “target date" funds but most of them have a limited track record and some have changed their asset allocation formulas, creating confusion about how to compare the available default options and choose the right one for your plan. This program will cover both the new DOL guidance and tips on what to look out for in selecting default investment alternative:

  • Employer-created QDIAs
  • Default investment before the effective date
  • Stable value and capital preservation options
  • Notice issues
  • 90-day limitation on fees and restrictions
  • “Round trip” restrictions
  • Differences among life cycle alternatives
  • Fees for QDIAs
