In response to the financial crisis, Congress passed The Worker, Retiree and Employer Recovery Act of 2008 in December. The new Act makes significant changes to the Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA) and also provides relief from the minimum distribution requirements for 2009. Our expert panel will discuss the impact of the financial crisis on pension plans and how the new Act will impact plan sponsors and employees. Topics to be covered include:
· Temporary funding relief for single-employer and multiemployer plans
· Other funding changes for single-employer plans, including
· Changes to target normal cost
· New asset smoothing rules
· Temporary relief from benefit restrictions in single-employer plans
· Elimination of 2009 minimum distributions from DC plans and IRAs
· Elimination of the default investment rules from the automatic enrollment 401(k) safe-harbor
· Required non-spouse beneficiary rollovers starting in 2010
· Other PPA technical corrections
